Next Generation NCLEX item types explained
Bowtie, matrix, highlight, drag-and-drop and more — what each NGN item asks you to do.
NGN items measure clinical judgment: recognizing cues, analyzing them, prioritizing hypotheses, generating solutions, taking action and evaluating outcomes.
Bowtie items ask you to link a condition to actions and parameters to monitor. Matrix items ask you to choose for each row. Highlight items ask you to select relevant parts of a chart.
Study the official candidate tutorial to see these interactions. Our current interactive practice uses single-answer and select-all-that-apply questions; additional NGN interactions are not yet available.
